NEWS RELEASE: Christ Universal Temple Hosts 1st Chicago “Peace Through Pie” Social for Design Non-Profit

Christ Universal Temple will host the non-profit organization Project Osmosis, for Chicago’s 1st “Peace through Pie” Social.  What better way to celebrate the Martin Luther King holiday, than sharing the story of “peace”, with a slice of pie.

The event will be held Monday, Jan 16, 2012 at 11901 S. Vincennes, Chicago, IL., from 1pm until 4pm.

Founded by the Rev. Johnnie Colemon in 1956, Christ Universal Temple (C.U.T.) is currently under the direction of Reverend Derrick B. Wells, who was installed as Senior Minister on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011.

As a result of the Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon's vision, many departments, ministries and programs were developed – many of which offer comprehensive support for students. Project ACHIEVE is one of the programs, that was developed in 1994, to help more students enter a post-secondary institution and/or career based industry, to counter the possibility of their entering the penal system. The program initially sought to address; Educational Excellence, Parent Participation, Life Skills, and Transition to Job Placement.

Project ACHIEVE continues to provide its initial programming to students, parents and community leaders in the Chicagoland area.  As the program has expanded, so has extended it’s services to the community.

Osmosis Education and Mentoring Initiative was originated through the Organization of Black Designers Chicago (OBD Chicago). OBD Chicago previously functioned as a professional support network, yet from its inception, the heart of the chapter has been to create opportunities for minority youth.

Project Osmosis has developed to become a focused group of creative professionals, represented from all of the design disciplines including; architecture, interiors, fashion, graphic arts, multi-media and industrial.  The Osmosis volunteers work tirelessly to ignite student’s interests, and to acquaint them with careers that allow their unique talents, to be expressed through imagination and innovation.

The Osmosis philosophy is expressed in 3 words; dreams, self-expression and community.  Dreams can come true. Self-expression matters. The community benefits from creativity. The result is a generation of youth in under sourced communities, who believe “I can create, I can improve."

As result of these powerful testaments to the service of youth and community, Christ Universal Temple and Project Osmosis forged an inspirational kinship, with the founders of “Peace Through Pies” – Luanne Stovall and Toni Tipton Martin of Austin, TX.  Imagine a world of "peace", implemented through the lens of visionaries like these, who continuously offer their interpretation of beauty, sustainable environments, and healthy communities.

You are invited to attend the 1st Chicago “Peace Through Pie” Social.  There is no cost to attend.  However, we ask that you purchase a slice or whole pie, and join the conversation about “design” and how the “arts” creates “peace”.  Depending on the type of pie, cost will start at $1.00 per slice to $25.00 per pie.  Proceeds benefit the Project Osmosis and Christ Universal Temple selection of programs, that support under sourced students.
