WHAT MOMMA LEFT ME
What Momma Left Me is the debut young adult novel brought to us by Renee Watson. Although this is her first novel, the Portland, Oregon native is no stranger to the writing scene. She has previously authored a picture book and written a multitude of short stories, poems, plays and even one woman shows.
This novel, set in the author’s hometown, illustrates the life and times of thirteen year old Miss Serenity Evans after the heartbreaking death of her mother and the distressing role her father plays in it all.
During this gloomy time in her life Serenity sorrowfully travels through the storm seeking peace of mind with the support of her family including her little brother and maternal grandparents, Family traditions, and a strengthened faith, with the help of her preacher grandfather also provide solace.
Friendships also play a significant role in finding the road to brighter days. Last but not least her journal, which opens several chapters of the narrative with an entry that gives readers a refresher course in literary devices along with giving her an outlet to express her feelings, also showcases Serenity’s creative writing skills. This tale depicts modern day growing pains in a creative and well written way and I’m sure we can expect more novels from author Renee Watson, the ending of this one certainly leaves me wanting an update on Serenity and all her family and friends.
