Lack of Fights Baffle Vatos That Fight
CHICAGO--A local west side street gang known as “Vatos That Fight,” is being forced to rename themselves due to severe lack of fighting. The newly formed and predominantly Latino gang has only been involved in two fights since their formation almost a year ago. This drought of violence has left gang members both confused and lethargic.
In an interview with gang member Juan Carlos or Crazy Vato as he has been called by the gang since he joined in April, he said,
“If I would have known that there would be such a lack of fighting, I might have gotten beaten into a more productive gang.”
The first of the gang's poor fight count of two was an incident that involved local taco stand owner Anthony Rojas who was struck with several of his own condiments after insisting that the amount of guacamole on Juan Munoz's beef taco was indeed “extra.” Juan, AKA Loco Vato, demanded more guacamole after having paid 75 cents extra. Crazy Vato then became enraged and the gang began to throw the free condiments at Mr. Rojas, including a large bottle of La Salsa Mas Picante which struck Rojas in the temple.
The only other fight the Vatos have managed was against themselves during a meeting in which violence broke out while trying to decide the uniform color of their bandannas. Since then, the gang has done a lot of “cruising” and “chilling.”
Ironically, the gang's entry policy requires a two minute full-out beating, which is to be administered by the entire gang. Gang leader La Mas Vato Loco (which translates to "the most crazy vato”), only releasing his gang name, insists that the beatings are “to insure the level of toughness for all the fighting and shit.” “When I first started Vatos That Fight, I thought we'd fight a lot with other gangs. And at first I thought that no one wanted it with us; the name sound pretty tough you know, but then I found out that they just didn't have any problems with us. To be honest bro, I kind of like those guys too.”
Since the lack of fighting, more applicable names have been thrown around, such as, “Vatos That Chill,” “Vatos That Ride,” and “Crazy Vatos That Chill A Lot But Can Still Fight Pretty Well.”
Other more established gangs such as the Gangster Disciples and the Blackstone Rangers have a long history of fighting and a deeply established rivalry, which spawns an average of over 300 fights a year. Many of the other gangs believe that the Vatos just don't have the kind of deep, though completely senseless, hatred of another gang.
Blackstone member Andre “Lil' Boo” Edwards states, “Shiiiiiiiiit, it takes years to establish a steady rival gang. You can't expect to just come into this and get a fight everyday. Shit like this takes time to get the number of fights that we be getting every year. Shit, you want to fight right now?”
The Vatos are still deciding on a new name, but no matter what name, they will still be willing to fight if the chance should ever come about.
