Three generations of women entrepreneurs
By Toure Muhammad
Joslyn S. Slaughter, co-owner of Jordan’s Closets Resale Boutique and Jordan’s Mom’s Closets, and her family members are great examples of the importance of having a family culture of entrepreneurship. Along with her mother, Jera L. and daughter Jordan these three generations of women are running these two stores together.
"I grew up around business owners within my family," said Joslyn.
Although business ownership was common, Joslyn didn’t catch the bug for entrepreneurship until she was inspired by her four year old daughter. Little Jordan had plenty of clothes she’d quickly outgrow and Joslyn heard about a boutique on the north side that sold gently used clothes. Joslyn visited the store, however, she thought the mark up was too huge so she decided to keep her daughters clothes and explore opening up her own store so they could offer better prices.
“My mom and I sat up and brain stormed all that night. We went to sleep about 8am in the morning,” said Joslyn. “Now, my mom and my daughter, Jordan who is now 8-years-old, are my business partners. Jordan can tell you about the merchandise and everything else about the business. It’s lets her know she can accomplish anything,” she said.
Since March 2006, Jordan’s Closets has carried little girls clothing, shoes, accessories and outwear gently worn and handled with loving care. This upscale, retail boutique carries sizes newborn to 14 at affordable prices.
Additionally, Jordan’s Mom’s Closets is fabulous, affordable, gently worn apparel, shoes, accessories and outerwear for the bargain conscious fashionista. Sizes range from petite to plus size 3x.
