Black Jesus not even considered for pivotal role in new NBC dramatic comedy
'The closest we got to a Black Jesus was when Richard Pryor walked on water in The Toy'
Several demonstrators held a candlelight vigil in Los Angeles to express the displeasure with the new television dramatic comedy, "The Book of Daniel," because “once again” Black Jesus was overlooked.
“For the love of Black Jesus!” shouted demonstrators. "What do we want?! ... Jesus. How do we want him!?...Black!
The show focuses on an Episcopalian minister and father who talks with Jesus who helps him navigate family problems, church politics and even his addiction to prescription drugs.
“We never see Black Jesus in mainstream movies and television,” said Raheema Johnson. “Black Jesus did have a non-speaking role when he played a photograph in the 1970s hit sitcom, Good Times. But since then, the closest we got to a Black Jesus was when Richard Pryor walked on water in the “Toy.””
Maybe whomever win the Superbowl next month will not just thank Jesus, but Black Jesus.
