Mr. Damon Williams: Yes, his name is a headline all by itself

By Tasha Lester

“Self being oblivious to the conscious is unscrupulous nonsense so to gain content self must preserve and pay homage to its origin, knowledge.”- Tasha Lester.

For those oblivious to this man, please read on.  A handsome Chicago native, Damon Williams is not only a multi-talented comedian who opened up for The Kings of Comedy and world-renowned celebrities such as Luther Vandross, The Isley Brothers, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle but he has been the host of the Apollo and performed in myriad sold out shows at Chicago’s own United Center and New York’s Madison Square Garden amongst others.

He got his start here in Chicago at the now closed comedy club,  All Jokes Aside where comedian Sinbad’s brother was the host of this taped comedy show. “The show’s concept was ahead of its time and Def Jam was hot back then.  I made it on television five months after being taped on All Jokes Aside.  The comedy business is more easily accessible than the music business and it can lead to other avenues.  If you are funny, you will find yourself on TV in no time” says Damon.

He is also the anchor of his family.  His desire to provide for his family on a daily basis drives him.  They turn to him in rough times.  He enjoys his job and expects to take it to the next level.  At one point while writing for the Jenny Jones Show, working college tours and opening up for concerts he got complacent but in order to continue his momentum, he is now thinking about creating a sitcom.

Hopefully he will land a role in a film soon.  The biggest problem with film auditions for Damon is to know he has to read from a script and totally not be himself.  It is different than repeating your own words.  He gets nervous when he performs and nervous when he auditions.  From seeing him perform live I know for sure Damon is a true performer.

He uses a lot of improv in his performance.  What makes this a success for Damon?  “The mark of a comic is to go off the top of your head, but it comes with experience.  Jokes I do on the road will not work all the time because I have to relate to the crowd.  If you are lucky and gifted, you will know that doing set routines all the time will not work.  You have to entertain everybody,” relates Damon.

Have you had a chance to see Damon perform live?  Well what the hell are you waiting for?  You can find him hosting “Funny First Saturdays” held in Joe’s Sports Bar located at 940 West Weed Street but the next three to four shows will be held at the Chicago Hilton.  Call (312) 718-8311 for more info.

For this event, Damon personally selects funny talent and then flies in one or two comedians to entertain you.  Such comedians who have already graced the stage of “Funny First Fridays” were Kim Whitley and E-Flat.  You can expect a great time at a great place for a great price.  Nothing is over $20.00.  You may purchase tickets online for $12.50.  DJ Dollar Bill spins it on the ones and twos combining music with the other entertainment.

Look out for Damon this fall on the new season of BET’s Comic View and in November on Comedy Central’s show “Premium Blend.”

Technically, the man needed no introduction.  But for those who did not know this talented comedian conveniently located right in your own Chicago backyard, I had to school you.
